Monomyth / Story Circle Scrivener Outline

Here is the file to start a new Scrivener project using the Monomyth as a skeleton for your novel:

If you don't use Scivener, here is the outline:

Call to Adventure

The hero is living a mundane life and some event or information draws them on the adventure.
They are called to action by a problem big enough to keep them fighting toward it till the end of the novel.

Refusal of Call

The hero refuses the call. This might be from fear, or apathy, or another duty that blocks them.
They eventually accept the call, either by choice or force.

Mentor / Supernatural Aid

Now committed to the adventure, a guide, mentor, or magical helper appears to help them on
their journey.

Crossing the First Threshold

This is where the hero starts their journey.

Bell of the Whale

This is where the hero finally finds themselves in the muck of their adventure and it gets dirty.

Road of Trials

This is a series of tests or tasks that befall the hero along the way, often a set of three.
This is the bulk of the middle of the story and is a lot longer than some other sections.

Meeting with the Goddess

This is where the hero finds some love or connection that brings them ultimate joy.

Temptation

Something or someone tries to tempt the hero to abandon their journey.

Atonement with the Father

In this step, the hero must face their father. This can be a literal father, or a metaphor
for their personal flaws, things that get in the way of their success.
It is through this atonement that they gain the ability to finish their quest.

Apostasis

Even though they have the ability to win, now your character must die.
This doesn’t have to be a literal death, but this is where everything gets worse before it gets better.
They might fail in a way that causes them great loss, like the loss of a loved one,
or the loss of a cell phone.

The Ultimate Boon

Success! The hero has solved the main problem of the quest, if this is a hero story.
If this is a tragedy, they fail, and fail bad and irrevocably, leaving them broken and limping away.

Refusal of Return

The hero refuses to return to their normal life. They have been changed by the
adventure and cannot see themselves living among the mundane.

Magic Flight

The hero must sometimes escape with the goal in hand. This can be just as
dangerous as the trip there.

Rescue from Without

Sometimes the hero needs someone to guide them back to their normal life, if they do return.

Crossing the Return Threshold

They make it back to normal life. 

Master of Two Worlds

They find a way to  live with the knowledge of both words, of the mundane
life and of that other life of adventure. Or they don’t, and it eats them up and causes them great pain.

Freedom to Live

Having survived death, they now have a new clarity in life. They have a
newfound freedom to live without fear of death. That freedom might mean
that they decide to throw off the shackles of their former life and rise to even greater heights.
